We are excited to announce the opening of classes for grades K-7!

A creative approach to Jewish education is coming downtown. The New Shul is partnering with the School for Creative Judaism to bring its unique approach to a new branch of the school opening this September on Fifth Avenue and 12th Street at First Presbyterian Church. The branch will offer a B Mitzvah journey including Hebrew reading, Torah chanting and prayer, alongside in depth study and discussion of Torah stories, Jewish holidays and 20th century Jewish history. Through this experience, shared with other children their age, students will find out for themselves what being Jewish means to them. They gain a sense of community, where they can connect, share and grow together.

One hour classes in small peer groups based on age will be followed by a communal gathering with music and discussion led by cantor and musician Dana Herz and Rabbi Misha Shulman. All teachers at SCJ are Israeli artists living and working in New York.

Of the many things American Jews have learned this past year, perhaps the clearest is that we must give our children an understanding of, and appreciation for their Jewish identity, so that they can feel a sense of security and ownership over their tradition. For over fifteen years, and through hundreds of Bnai Mitzvah, SCJ has been creating fun and inquisitive environments for NYC children to learn about where they came from and how their ancestors inspire them to act in the world. Join us on this next leg of our journey.

In addition we will be opening a group for children ages 5-7, which will focus on stories, art, holiday activities and music, building on the active teaching methods that earned SCJ the Mintz Prize for Creative Jewish Education.
