MUSIC: Kaitz Niggun

Kaitz קיץ is a niggun in three parts describing different meanings of the Hebrew word for summer. As is the case today, in the Hebrew Bible Kaitz is the season opposite of winter. In some verses the word signifies fruit, for example: “And you shall gather wine and kaitz and oil and put it in your vessels” (Jeremiah 10:10). It is common to interpret that these are summer fruits, especially figs, as stated in the Tosefta in the Tractate Nedarim. Some believe that the word Kaitz is the act of collecting figs, similar to other nouns of this meter, such as daish (hunt). Kaitz, in the sense of summer fruit, is also mentioned in the famous prophecy of Amos “This is what my Lord GOD showed me: There was a cage of kaitz. He said, ‘What do you see, Amos?’ ‘A basket of figs,’ I replied. And the LORD said to me: ‘The hour of doom has come for My people Israel; I will not pardon them again’.” A cage of kaitz is a basket of summer fruits and some say figs.
