From Sarah Chien:

Throughout the pandemic, I created improvised performances with only the camera as my audience. I created new pieces every week, on my rooftop, in my living room, in parks. It didn't feel prolific at the time, but now I have a vast archive of dancing from the year we all endured. Like what I will share in the Kumah festival, this performance captures my immediate response to that moment in time, without pre-meditated choreography. This one is especially poignant as we now observe the year anniversary of the pandemic. Duration: 7 min

We're now right in the middle of the period of the year where diversity months come one after another. As a person with many "minority" identities, this can feel more exhausting than celebratory. Created for the DanceNow Festival at Joe's Pub, rollercoaster captures my experience of the internal and external forces that pull on my emotions on a daily basis — all in 5 minutes! This piece was developed in collaboration with director Lauren Hlubny who also developed and directed Songs Stuck in My Body. Duration: 5 min

This is my signature piece, a one-woman-show that premiered in 2019 and had just begun touring the Fringe Festival circuit when the pandemic hit. The piece seeks to answer the question "What do we do with memories that no longer fit?" using dance, storytelling and song to excavate the "childhood crap" rattling around my head and my mom's midwestern basement. The show is 45 minutes, and I've included the full video here should you wish to watch it all. But, I recommend you view a ten-minute excerpt from 24:02- 35:15 (you'll need to cue it up yourself). Duration 10 min out of 45 min
